New Rail Gun FTF Problems??

Sorry if this is a newbie question and I have done some searches on it, but took my new Rail Gun out today for the first 200 rds and had about 10 FTF's. Most of them were feeding the first round into the chamber. I was loading the magazine with slide open, and then racking it by hand (dropping the slide). The first round seemed to come halfway in at an angle and stop. Pulling the slide back usually allowed the round to fall out. Then racking it again would bring second round in no problem. I used 3 different magazines 2 were Colt and the other is a Chip McCormick. They all had the same problem. I did have a couple FTF's pop up in the middle of a magazine, same thing stuck halfway in at an angle. Oh, I was using WWB and some factory reloads made by Precision Cartridge.

Thanks for any input. This is my first 1911, so I am still learning. Im going to clean it up tonight and try again this weekend.

Clean, Lu e, and load each magazine one rounders d short of full. Try 100 and if all goes well, load the mags full and try again. When the round has suck did you notice if the extractor still had ahold of it?

The jury is always still out for the first 400-500 rounds of a new 1911; I had an STI Spartan that had 6-7 FTF on my first 100 rounds, another 2-3 my second 100, 1-2 my third, and none at all after that. As the motion of the slide settles into the frame, the FTF issues usually subside. It concerns me that some of your FTF's were so serious that your pistol needing more than a tap on the butt to seat the round. Try another 200 rounds or so and if it's still doing it, you may need a feed ramp polish or extractor adjustment.

Im thinking it has something to do with the feed ramp on the frame. I stripped and cleaned just the gun before ever firing it, not the magazines. The first 50 rds were flawless then progressively got more jams. The gun has a cerakote coating on the frame including the feed ramp. When I tore it down last night and cleaned it, I noticed a lot of wear marks on the feed ramp that wore through the coating. That combined with the WWB ammo that always seems to be a little dirty might have been causing all the problems. Especially since it started out ok and got worse the more I shot.

So.. I cleaned and lubed it all up. Tonight I'll look into cleaning the magazines. Then this weekend try it again. If im still having problems I'll probably see about getting the feed ramp and throat polished.

Ill also give the downloading a shot, and tap the mags to seat the rounds a try.

I'd remove the coating from the feed ramp.If it was a surface treatment like blueing or Melonite it wouldn't bother me but I don't want paint on it,you're already digging it off.I belive Pistolwrench and/or Bob Rodgers do this.Dry mags and extractor tension are other areas to check but you said it worked before this work was done so you need to backtrack through what was changed.

My feed ramp has the same markings. I took mags apart, cleaned and lightly oiled them. They seemed a bit smoother afterwards. Hopefully thats all it is. Ill try tapping the back of the mags to seat the rounds also. Like I said all the problems happened when chambering the first round. I think I only had one jam in the middle of a mag. That could be me limp wristing though.

I was not able to get to the range this weekend, but I did run some snap caps through it about 100 times. I didnt have any problems or issues. Im hoping that since it was new and started to get dirty, that was the cause of the problems. Now that it is all cleaned and lubed and the magazines all cleaned up hopefully the issues are solved!

I hope.

Finally got back to the range. The gun ran flawlessly. I short loaded and tapped the mags to make sure rounds were seated, like everyone suggested. Thanks for tips!! Now I just need to fix myself to tighten up the groupings.
